Florida has two levels of dental assistant. An on-the-job trained dental assistant can perform basic functions like setting up appointments, reviewing records with a patient or getting a patient’s basic vitals. An expanded duties dental assistant can take a more active role in the dental office and perform radiology, topical fluoride application, and making teeth impressions.

If you also want to perform x-rays, you will need to apply for Dental Radiology licensing from the Florida Board of Dentistry. Requirements for this responsibility include the following:

• Three months of on-the-job training under a licensed dentist in dental radiology procedures -and-
• Proof of approved coursework within 12 months of your on-the-job training.
